Event Beginning Date: 10/26/2009
Event Ending Date: 6/30/2010
Normal Hours
Air Zoo
"The Spirit of Flight: The History of Aviation Through Art" is an exhibit that chronicles the history of a variety of aircraft and aircraft carriers from their earliest beginnings right up to today's modern airplanes. This exhibit features more than 50 pieces of artwork, most of which are signed by the pilot or crew of the plane being depicted. In addition to the visual materials, the exhibit features a variety of artifacts. Visitors also have the chance to climb into three full-size aircraft cockpit trainers and make believe they are flying on or off of a carrier. Of special interest are three impressively large models of U.S. Navy warships. These include a 9-1/2-foot-long model of the USS Wisconsin, an 8-foot model of the USS Nimitz and a 6-foot model of the USS Arleigh Burke. The exhibit also includes a display about Drs. Walter and William Good, two brothers who grew up in Kalamazoo and developed the Guff-the first successful radio-controlled model airplane.

The exhibition is the first organized in the U.S. to present a comprehensive overview of the beginnings and development of this important art form. This exhibition features 65 Chinese woodblock prints.

Though separated by about 150 years, Francisco Goya and Federico Castellon often appear closer to one another than to their contemporaries, as they both turned their attention to the human condition. Many artists have been drawn to things dark and fantastic, but few have probed the human condition with the insight and truthfulness found in these images.

Conclusion of King of Masks. Set in 1930s China, King of Masks is the beautifully filmed story of an aging street performer and master of Sichuan Change Art, (where a succession of masks is changed instantaneously). The master longs to adopt a son to pass on the secrets of his art. Yet when the right child suddenly appears, the outcome is far different than what he expects. Roger Ebert called King of Masks "a film of simplicity, beauty, and surprising emotional power."
