Vintage Shopping in Kalamazoo County
When I was a child, my mom would put my brother and I through hours and hours of insufferable shopping for antiques. Every road trip was a nightmare filled with dusty, musty stores located on desolate roads where serial killers probably lived. Our old Victorian house was filled with tin cans, kitchen paraphernalia and medicinal poisons that were popular in the early 1900s. I vowed to never fill my home with other people’s old leftovers…until I bought a house that was built in 1947 and became smitten with all things Mid-Century Modern.
The Heritage Company
150 North Edwards Street
Kalamazoo, MI 49007
The Heritage Company was established in 1986 to house salvaged windows, doors, light fixtures, hardware, millwork, sinks, claw foot tubs and more. Because of the type of architectural features they carry, they are great for finding materials to restore your midcentury home to its former glory! Some of my favorite finds have been:
Crystal door handles that match the original handles in my house:
4217 Portage Road
Kalamazoo, MI 49001
6883 West Main Street
Kalamazoo, MI 49009
Both locations of Kalamazoo Kitty are great for finding furniture, housewares and crafts from several different eras. They also hold classes to teach you how to create your own treasures using chalk paint and distressing techniques.
Some of my favorite finds from Kalamazoo Kitty have been:
My red Formica kitchen table:
1301 South Westnedge Avenue
Kalamazoo, MI 49001
Retro is midcentury modern heaven. Thom and Bob offer high quality furniture and accessories ensuring that your house is the coolest house on the block!! Retro also houses local artists and is a stop during the Art Hop. Some of my most beloved pieces have been found at Retro through the years, including:
My lovely blonde credenza:
My glorious lava rock lamp!
Swordfish ash tray:
Retro also holds several estate sales each year and with some patience and determination, many wonderful things can be found:
