An Afternoon in Kalamazoo for the Introverted Traveler

Posted on August 5th, 2019

It’s an extrovert’s world, but for all the introverts looking to travel to or explore Kalamazoo, there are so many ways that you can do just that without feeling drained of energy by the end of the day.

To all the introverts out there: these four activities, from the wide-open spaces of Asylum Lake Preserve to the quiet corners of Fido Motors Cafe, are for you.

Coffee at Fido Motors Cafe

Tucked away in the corner of a historic warehouse, in Kalamazoo’s Edison Neighborhood, Fido Motors Cafe is the celebration of our passions for coffee and scooter culture. With its machine shop vibes and a well curated menu of offerings, Fido offers a change of pace from the ordinary.

Their coffee menu is based on seasonal offerings via Populace Coffee. Espresso preparation is made by their professional baristas and brewed coffee options include drip, pour overs, and nitro cold brew. They offer organic teas from Rishi Tea and brew it hot or cold. Fido Motors Cafe prides themselves in quality and creativity and offer a great selection of house made syrups, seasonal drinks and other unique menu options.

Hike at Asylum Lake Preserve

An afternoon at Asylum Lake Preserve is a sure way to escape from the city for a few moments, get a breath of fresh air and reconnect with nature. Asylum is a great option for those looking to venture off the beaten path a bit, but not looking to drive more than a couple of miles out from downtown or the surrounding neighborhoods. Along with offering gorgeous views of the lake, plus some nice and easily hike-able trails, the property itself boasts a pretty interesting history! The land is owned by Western Michigan University. You can read more about the history of the Asylum Lake Preserve here.

Lunch at Shawarma King

Shawarma King is a family-owned Mediterranean restaurant that is beloved by so many in Kalamazoo and beyond! Their fresh food, delicious flavor, generous portions and top-notch hospitality are what keep people coming back. Something we hear often from out-of-town visitors is that they specifically pencil in a visit to Shawarma King into their itinerary when they’re traveling to or through Kalamazoo! We suggest trying the Shawafal Sandwich – which includes hummus, tahini sauce, tabbouli, falafel, chicken and beef shawarma, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles!

Happy Hour at Tibb’s Brewing Company

Tibbs Brewing Company was created to produce hand crafted, high quality, small batch craft beers. They currently brew on a 2 barrel (62 US gallons) system to allow for constant experimental batches. Visitors and locals rave about the quality of the beer, but also about the people, the bartenders and the welcoming and friendly atmosphere!  Tibb’s is open 7 days a week. Our go-to beer of choice is the Ben Jonesin’ – a chocolate toffee porter!
