Kayaking, biking, and hiking
Start your day in Kalamazoo by going outside! Kayaking is a major activity in Kalamazoo – partly because you can kayak through downtown! There are other ways to explore the great outdoors in Kalamazoo that don’t require a paddle. You can peddle through Kalamazoo with beautiful bike trails and a bike-friendly downtown area. Learn more about biking in Kalamazoo here. Lastly, outside of the hustle and bustle of the city you can find some Pure Michigan hiking. We recommend checking out the Kalamazoo Nature Center, Kellogg Forest, W.K. Kellogg Experiment Forest, and River Oaks County Park! After all of the paddling, peddling, and walking – you deserve a cold one!
Grab a Beer
Arcadia Ales, Bell’s Brewery, and One Well Brewing
Craft beer aficionados can find everything they could ever want in Kzoo – which is known for its wide selection of breweries! Arcadia Ales is a popular place to try their award-winning beers and bask in the glory of their awesome beer garden. Craft beer lovers should definitely add Bell’s Eccentric Café to their itinerary. Bell’s Brewery is known for their beers, but the Eccentric Café offers a delicious menu, and awesome outdoor concerts during the warmer months in Pure Michigan. Last but not least, be sure to check out one of the highest rated breweries in Kalamazoo – One Well Brewing. This fun-spirited brewery offers top-of-the-line craft beers and allows you to add a scoop of ice cream to any beer for $1. Yum! Learn more about all of the breweries in the area here.
Discover Arts & Culture
Heritage Guitars, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and Farmers Alley Theatre
Now it is time to enrich the soul with some arts and culture. Kalamazoo is packed with artists, musicians, dancers, makers, and more. Find out why they choose to call this place home by visiting some of the vibrant arts organizations in Kalamazoo. Heritage Guitars is an exciting place for musicians (and music lovers). See the intricate process behind building an instrument in this “working museum”. From the raw materials, all the way to practicing on a custom-made piece, you will experience the making of a guitar and a guitarist! Other noteworthy adventures are checking out the current exhibits at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and catching a show at the Farmers Alley Theatre.
Grab a Bite of Food
Shakespeare’s Pub, Crow’s Nest, and Rustica
Time to chow down! Kalamazoo does this better than just about any other city in Michigan. Shakespeare’s Pub is an ideal place to smash on pizzas, sandwiches, and even organic dining! Looking for breakfast? Look no further than Crow’s Nest. Just make sure to build some extra time into your breakfast, because it is not uncommon to find a line outside their door for breakfast. (Which is understandable considering they have delicious scrambles and four different types of French toast!) Add some fanciness to your Kalamazoo visit by checking out Rustica. This is a beautiful place for a romantic meal, or a sophisticated business meeting. They have an extensive wine selection and a delicious menu with dishes like steamed mussels, house-made gnocchi, and braised lamb.
Time for a Nightcap!
Stamped Robin, Principle Food and Drink, and Green Door Distilling Co.
Craft beer isn’t the only adult-beverage mastered by Kalamazoo! Find artisanal cocktails at places like the Stamped Robin. Most of their cocktails include only three ingredients, which makes every drink simply delicious. The experience is enhanced by high quality ingredients and knowledgeable mixologists. Another great place to grab a cocktail is Principle Food and Drink. Not only do they have an exquisite food menu (with seared scallops, duck cavatelli, and peanut butter banana splits) but the cocktails are also amazing! Their drink menu is separated into two sections; stirred and shaken. Not to mention – they have an impressive collection of wine, and beer! Last but not least, get one final taste of Kalamazoo at Green Door Distilling Co. Take sips of hand-crafted bourbon, whiskey, and vodka – made in Kalamazoo! Just be sure to enjoy these adult-beverages responsibly and consider calling a cab or Uber.
There you have it! If you manage to get outdoors, drink a craft beer, catch a show, grab a bite to eat, and have a nightcap – you did it all! Well, almost all of it. Follow Discover Kalamazoo on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to learn about more things to do in the area!
