Posted on April 30th, 2015

Springtime is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the new season! There are plenty of family events happening around town in the month of May. Many of these events are free or cheap.

Here are some of our favorite family events that we’re looking forward to in the upcoming month:

Kalamazoo Rock and Gem Show at the Kalamazoo Expo Center on May 1 through May 3 at the Kalamazoo Expo Center. $3 admission for adults, 12 and under free. At the show, explore and discover the world of rocks, minerals and fossils.

Your kids can pan for gold, play some games, polish a Petoskey stone and more! If you have a rock lover in the family, you don’t want to miss this event.

The Kalamazoo Farmers’ Market opens on May 2 and runs every Saturday from 7 am – 2 pm. The Kalamazoo Farmers’ Market is a great way to get you in the mood for spring and remind you that summer will be here soon! In addition to over 100 vendors, Saturdays will feature a variety of food trucks offering a wide range of prepared foods. There are also entertainment options such as local musicians and kids activities. Grab your basket and plan to head down to the Kalamazoo Farmers’ Market soon.

The 4th Annual Touch-A-Truck Event is on May 9 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds. The cost is only $10 per family, $4 for adults, and $2 for children (2 and under free). This is a great way to check out over 40 unique vehicles. This event is organized by the Junior League of Kalamazoo.

Check out the free Family Fishing Fair featuring Jonathon VanDam, professional fisherman at Ramona Park in Portage on May 16 from 10 am to 1 pm.  Celebrate the onset of summer with the entire family! 150 kids will go home with their own fishing rod, courtesy of United Water! Plus many more prizes including a “ grand prize” Kayak from Lee’s Adventure Sports, fishing equipment and instruction will be available for those hoping to reel in their catch of the day!

The Family Bike Fest on May 16 from 10 am to 1 pm at Mayor’s Riverfront Park in Kalamazoo is a great way to get the kiddos active and break out the bikes for the season. The 3rd Annual Family Bike Fest is a chance for families, kids, adults and the community to come together during Kalamazoo Bike Week. The event is free and no bike is required, but they are encouraged. Activities include a group ride, games, a BMX bike show, and prizes for kids and adults, just for coming out and celebrating bicycling in Kalamazoo.

What better way to kick-off summer than with an outdoor movie? Movies in the Park by the Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation Department will begin the summer season with the showing of Jurassic Park on May 29 at 9 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and settle in for a great movie at South Westnedge Park.

I hope that you can get out with your family to enjoy one of these events this spring!
