Kalamazoo, Mich. — “I feel like it suits me,” Emma Neill said of her 2-week-old pink hair color.

“It’s natural,” chimed in her friend, referring to how Neill’s hair color fits her personality.

Neill, who was born and raised in Kalamazoo, recently graduated from University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, where she studied lettering, illustration and stop-motion animation.

While looking for a job, Neill is back in Kalamazoo and enjoying her time with family and friends. On this particular day, she was out and about in Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo, where she and a friend met her mother for lunch.

“The people here (in Kalamazoo) are different than anywhere else,” Neill said. “They’re very nice and hospitable.

“Nobody is judgmental — they’re all just trying to have a good time,” she added.

People of Kalamazoo is a way to encounter the vibrant, fun and interesting humans who make up this beautiful community. They are both residents and visitors of Kalamazoo, who were discovered while they were simply enjoying our town.
