Kalamazoo is full of charm with its historic streets, local eats, artsy spots, and plenty of green spaces to explore. In just a weekend, you can stroll through downtown, enjoy the outdoors, and stumble upon little surprises around every corner. Here is how we spent our weekend in Kalamazoo.
Where to Stay
We stayed at The Kalamazoo House Downtown Hotel & Suites, a historic downtown building beautifully updated into a modern boutique hotel. From the moment we stepped inside, it felt cozy, welcoming, and full of positive energy, with thoughtful touches everywhere that made it feel instantly like home. Each morning, we looked forward to a fresh breakfast served by the kindest staff, making the start of our day feel extra special. Honestly, it was the most luxurious bed and breakfast experience we have ever had.
The location couldn’t have been better. Right in the heart of downtown, we could easily wander through the Kalamazoo Mall, pop into local restaurants and coffee shops, or simply soak up everything the area had to offer. The perfect mix of convenience and historic charm made our stay feel truly memorable and absolutely irresistible.
Activities and Attractions
Downtown Kalamazoo was much bigger than we expected, and wandering through the Kalamazoo Mall was definitely a highlight. It holds a special place in history as the very first outdoor pedestrian mall in the United States and is the largest of its kind, making exploring all the shops so much fun. You can pop into Spirit of Kalamazoo for Kalamazoo merch and local souvenirs, Terrapin Worldwide Imports for unique handcrafted pieces, or the Mason Jar Plant Shop for adorable greenery, just to name a few of the many spots worth visiting. There are also plenty of food and drink spots nearby, making your outing on the mall relaxing and easy to enjoy.
Just a short walk away, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum is free and perfect for both families and curious adults. Its interactive exhibits make it easy to feel like a kid again, learning a little while having fun. Another gem is the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, founded in 1924 and located right next to the Kalamazoo House. Even a quick visit leaves you in awe of the wide range of art, from classic masterpieces to contemporary pieces that are a joy to explore.
For a little extra adventure, take a short drive to the Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum. This museum is full of historic aircraft, space exhibits, and interactive activities that make learning fun for all ages. We loved seeing the world's only remaining B-Model Trainer, the Lockheed SR-71 B 'Blackbird,' and experiencing the thrill of the flight simulator.
Nature and Outdoor Experiences
Kalamazoo is full of green spaces and trails that are perfect for stretching your legs and soaking up nature. The Kalamazoo Nature Center hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including guided butterfly walks at the Emma Pitcher Prairie. On this walk, you can get a close-up look at butterflies while learning fun facts about different species. It is surprising to see just how many types of butterflies live right around us. Even outside of special events, the Nature Center offers over 15 miles of hiking trails, open fields, and a learning center to explore at your own pace, making it easy to spend a whole afternoon wandering and discovering.
Another peaceful escape is the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, which has over three miles of trails winding around Wintergreen Lake. You can stroll through a variety of habitats and spot waterfowl, raptors, and other majestic birds while enjoying the calm and quiet of the outdoors. It’s a wonderful place to slow down, take a deep breath, and feel truly connected to nature.
Events and Local Experiences
Visiting Gull Meadow Farms during the Kalamazoo Balloon Festival can be an unforgettable, fair-like experience. You can enjoy giant, colorful hot air balloons, explore family-friendly farm activities, play games, meet the animals, and sample local food. The real showstopper is the Balloon Glow at night, when the balloons light up the sky, creating a magical moment you won’t forget.
For a musical treat, you could stop by Concerts in the Park at Bronson Park. This free seasonal series, offered from May through mid-October and presented by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, is full of lively performances. A multitude of bands and genres take the stage, from jazz to rock to tribute acts like the Andrew Fisher Quartet’s Stevie Wonder tribute, filling the park with happy, soulful vibes and providing a perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring.
Food and Drinks We Loved
Cherri’s Chocol’Art – Treat yourself to handcrafted chocolates and the famous Monster Milkshakes, pure indulgence and so fun to share. We also loved the affogato flight, which was an absolute delight.
Matcharia – Creative vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free drinks and snacks that are surprisingly delicious and full of personality. This little spot is a heaven for matcha lovers.
Zooroona Mediterranean Grill – Taste flavors from Greece, Morocco, Egypt, and beyond for a mini culinary trip around the Mediterranean without leaving Kalamazoo. The ambience here is on another level and makes the experience extra special.
Water Street Coffee Joint – Pop in for a cozy coffee break or a light snack and soak up the welcoming, relaxed vibes. The greenery and homey touches make it feel like a little local hideaway.
Latitude 42 Brewing Company – Unwind with local craft beers in a casual, friendly space. The food and staff are amazing, making it the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring.
Bell’s Eccentric Café – A world-renowned brewery and classic Kalamazoo spot for craft beer lovers. The lively atmosphere makes it a fun place for an evening out.
