Guide to Tailgating for a WMU Football Game

Gear up sports fans, because the tailgating season is upon us! Whether you are a rookie or a seasoned pro this tailgating season we've got you covered. Nothing is quite like the cars, live music, great food, and community at these events. But in order to be the MVP of the parking lot, you must know a few tips and tricks. Here are some of our recommendations on how to tailgate like a boss.

Guidelines/rules

For everyone to have a safe and fun time, there are some rules that tailgaters must follow. Fans can begin tailgating 4 hours before kickoff and 1 hour after. You can bring seating like lawn chairs, but couches or upholstered furniture must be left at home. Similarly, glass and tobacco cannot be brought to the venue either. Food and beverages are encouraged, however, there is no grilling at the tailgate so make sure to prepare beforehand if you want to bring those tasty hot dogs! If you pack a tent for extra privacy, place it behind your vehicle. If you plan to drive an RV to the event to fit all your friends, you may need to purchase multiple parking spots in the designated area. Additionally, follow all parking rules to avoid any issues. Look here for the exact lots and rules.

General Equipment

There are a few items that are crucial to any tailgating event. First and foremost, the right vehicle is important to your party. Make sure it has the space to transport everything you want and need to bring. Additionally, a large cooler is great for storing perishable foods and keeping beverages cool so you can stay chill before the big game. Games are also essential to having a good time with your friends. Having a competitive spirit will put everyone in the right mood to cheer on your team. Moreover, a Bluetooth speaker and a smartphone for music will keep the good times rolling from the beginning of the tailgate, all the way to kickoff.

Activities

Tailgating is as much about the fun as it is about the food, and there are plenty of activities to keep the energy high. A classic tailgating game like cornhole is easy to play and entertaining for all ages, while a game like ladder toss will bring a more competitive edge to the pre-game festivities. If typical games are not your style, then bringing a football to toss around will get everyone in the game-day mood and encourage physical activity. To get a unique tailgating experience, be sure to see the marching band’s pre-game performance or stop by Heritage Hall on specific game days for festivities hosted by the WMU Alumni Association.

Food and Beverage

No tailgate is complete without great food and drinks. Finger foods are always a hit and easy to eat, so consider packing items like sliders, nachos, and buffalo chicken dip. Side dishes like potato salad, coleslaw, chips, and dip are also great crowd-pleasers. While grilling isn't allowed at WMU tailgates, you can still bring pre-cooked burgers and brats, keeping them fresh in a cooler or thermal bag. And don't forget sweet treats like cookies, brownies, and cupcakes to satisfy those sugary cravings. Most importantly, staying hydrated with water and cool drinks will help you cheer throughout the game.

Community Engagement

If cooking is not your style, enhance your tailgating experience by exploring local spots around the stadium. Kalamazoo offers a variety of restaurants and bars perfect for grabbing a bite or a drink before or after the game. Check out popular spots like Bell's Eccentric Cafe for craft beers or Crow's Nest for a hearty meal. Additionally, there are numerous places to stay close to the stadium if you are from out of town. Stay Informed/Safety

Lastly, staying informed and prioritizing safety ensures that your tailgating experience is enjoyable for everyone. Check the weather forecast and be prepared for any conditions. Bring rain gear or sunscreen when needed. Keep track of game times, parking lot opening hours, and any announcements from WMU. Have a basic first aid kit on hand for minor injuries or emergencies. Be respectful to fellow tailgaters, fans of the opposing team, and university property. Good sportsmanship goes a long way.
